Overview

Abinadi teaches that God himself will come to earth as both Father and Son to redeem humanity, explains who will be saved in the first resurrection, and prophesies that salvation will be declared to all nations.

1

Abinadi said to them, "I want you to understand that God himself will come down among the children of men and will redeem his people."

Because he lives in the flesh, he will be called the Son of God, and by submitting the flesh to the will of the Father, he is both the Father and the Son—

Show original text

And because he dwelleth in flesh he shall be called the Son of God, and having subjected the flesh to the will of the Father, being the Father and the Son—

3

He is the Father because he was conceived by the power of God, and he is the Son because of the flesh, thus becoming both the Father and the Son.

Show original text

The Father, because he was conceived by the power of God; and the Son, because of the flesh; thus becoming the Father and Son—

4

They are one God, the Eternal Father of heaven and earth.

Show original text

And they are one God, yea, the very Eternal Father of heaven and of earth.

5

In this way, the flesh becomes subject to the Spirit, or the Son to the Father, being one God. He suffers temptation but does not give in to it, and allows himself to be mocked, scourged, cast out, and rejected by his people.

Show original text

And thus the flesh becoming subject to the Spirit, or the Son to the Father, being one God, suffereth temptation, and yieldeth not to the temptation, but suffereth himself to be mocked, and scourged, and cast out, and disowned by his people.

6

After doing many powerful miracles among the people, he will be led away, just as Isaiah said: like a sheep before its shearer is silent, he did not open his mouth.

Show original text

And after all this, after working many mighty miracles among the children of men, he shall be led, yea, even as Isaiah said, as a sheep before the shearer is dumb, so he opened not his mouth.

7

In the same way, he will be led, crucified, and killed, his body becoming subject to death, as the will of the Son is completely given to the will of the Father.

Show original text

Yea, even so he shall be led, crucified, and slain, the flesh becoming subject even unto death, the will of the Son being swallowed up in the will of the Father.

8

In this way, God breaks the bands of death, having gained victory over death, and gives the Son power to intercede for the children of men.

Show original text

And thus God breaketh the bands of death, having gained the victory over death; giving the Son power to make intercession for the children of men—

10

Now I ask you, who will declare his generation? I tell you, when his soul has been offered for sin, he will see his descendants. So what do you say? And who will be his descendants?

Show original text

And now I say unto you, who shall declare his generation? Behold, I say unto you, that when his soul has been made an offering for sin he shall see his seed. And now what say ye? And who shall be his seed?

11

I tell you that whoever has heard the words of the prophets—all the holy prophets who have prophesied about the coming of the Lord—and has listened to their words, believed that the Lord would redeem his people, and looked forward to that day for forgiveness of their sins, these are his seed, or heirs of the kingdom of God.

Show original text

Behold I say unto you, that whosoever has heard the words of the prophets, yea, all the holy prophets who have prophesied concerning the coming of the Lord—I say unto you, that all those who have hearkened unto their words, and believed that the Lord would redeem his people, and have looked forward to that day for a remission of their sins, I say unto you, that these are his seed, or they are heirs of the kingdom of God.

12

These are the ones whose sins he has carried; these are the ones for whom he died, to redeem them from their transgressions. So, aren't they his children?

For these are they whose sins he has borne; these are they for whom he has died, to redeem them from their transgressions. And now, are they not his seed?

13

Aren't the prophets—all those who have spoken to prophesy and have not fallen into sin, I mean all the holy prophets since the world began—his seed? I tell you, they are his seed.

Show original text

Yea, and are not the prophets, every one that has opened his mouth to prophesy, that has not fallen into transgression, I mean all the holy prophets ever since the world began? I say unto you that they are his seed.

15

Oh, how beautiful their feet were on the mountains!

Show original text

And O how beautiful upon the mountains were their feet!

16

And again, how beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who continue to proclaim peace!

Show original text

And again, how beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of those that are still publishing peace!

17

And again, how beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who will proclaim peace from now on and forever!

Show original text

And again, how beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of those who shall hereafter publish peace, yea, from this time henceforth and forever!

18

I also tell you, this isn't everything. How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of the one who brings good news, who establishes peace—even the Lord, who has redeemed his people, who has given salvation to his people.

Show original text

And behold, I say unto you, this is not all. For O how beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that is the founder of peace, yea, even the Lord, who has redeemed his people; yea, him who has granted salvation unto his people;

19

If it weren't for the redemption he has made for his people, which was prepared from the foundation of the world, I tell you, without it, all mankind would have perished.

Show original text

For were it not for the redemption which he hath made for his people, which was prepared from the foundation of the world, I say unto you, were it not for this, all mankind must have perished.

20

The bands of death will be broken, and the Son will reign and has power over the dead; so he brings about the resurrection of the dead.

Show original text

But behold, the bands of death shall be broken, and the Son reigneth, and hath power over the dead; therefore, he bringeth to pass the resurrection of the dead.

21

There will be a resurrection, the first resurrection—a resurrection of those who have lived, who are living, and who will live, up until the resurrection of Christ—for that is what he will be called.

Show original text

And there cometh a resurrection, even a first resurrection; yea, even a resurrection of those that have been, and who are, and who shall be, even until the resurrection of Christ—for so shall he be called.

22

The resurrection of all the prophets, and everyone who has believed their words or kept God's commandments, will happen in the first resurrection; they are the first resurrection.

These are the people who take part in the first resurrection; they are those who died before Christ came, in ignorance, without having salvation declared to them. The Lord restores them, and they have a part in the first resurrection, or receive eternal life, being redeemed by the Lord.

Show original text

And these are those who have part in the first resurrection; and these are they that have died before Christ came, in their ignorance, not having salvation declared unto them. Little children also have eternal life.

And little children also have eternal life.

26

Be afraid and tremble before God, because you should tremble; the Lord does not redeem those who rebel against Him and die in their sins. All who have died in their sins since the world began—those who have willfully rebelled against God, who have known His commandments and refused to keep them—these are the ones who have no part in the first resurrection.

Show original text

But behold, and fear, and tremble before God, for ye ought to tremble; for the Lord redeemeth none such that rebel against him and die in their sins; yea, even all those that have perished in their sins ever since the world began, that have wilfully rebelled against God, that have known the commandments of God, and would not keep them; these are they that have no part in the first resurrection.

27

So shouldn't you tremble? Salvation doesn't come to people like that, because the Lord hasn't redeemed them, and he can't redeem them. He cannot deny himself, and he cannot deny justice when it demands its due.

Show original text

Therefore ought ye not to tremble? For salvation cometh to none such; for the Lord hath redeemed none such; yea, neither can the Lord redeem such; for he cannot deny himself; for he cannot deny justice when it has its claim.
