Resumen
Nefi y su familia llegan a la fértil tierra de Abundancia tras años en el desierto. Nefi recibe el mandato de construir un barco, enfrenta la oposición de sus hermanos y les enseña sobre la fe y el poder de Dios.
Continuamos nuestro viaje por el desierto, viajando casi directamente hacia el este desde ese momento. Pasamos por muchas dificultades en el desierto, y nuestras mujeres dieron a luz a sus hijos allí.
And it came to pass that we did again take our journey in the wilderness; and we did travel nearly eastward from that time forth. And we did travel and wade through much affliction in the wilderness; and our women did bear children in the wilderness.
El Señor nos bendijo tanto que, aunque vivíamos de carne cruda en el desierto, nuestras mujeres pudieron amamantar bien a sus hijos y eran fuertes, igual que los hombres; empezaron a soportar sus viajes sin quejarse.
And so great were the blessings of the Lord upon us, that while we did live upon raw meat in the wilderness, our women did give plenty of suck for their children, and were strong, yea, even like unto the men; and they began to bear their journeyings without murmurings.
Vemos que los mandamientos de Dios deben cumplirse. Si las personas guardan los mandamientos de Dios, él las alimenta, las fortalece y les da los medios para cumplir lo que ha mandado. Él proveyó para nosotros mientras viajábamos por el desierto.
And thus we see that the commandments of God must be fulfilled. And if it so be that the children of men keep the commandments of God he doth nourish them, and strengthen them, and provide means whereby they can accomplish the thing which he has commanded them; wherefore, he did provide means for us while we did sojourn in the wilderness.
Viajamos y vivimos en el desierto durante muchos años, incluso ocho años.
And we did sojourn for the space of many years, yea, even eight years in the wilderness.
Llegamos a la tierra que llamamos Abundancia porque tenía mucha fruta y miel silvestre. El Señor había preparado todas estas cosas para que no perezcamos. Vimos el mar, al que llamamos Irreantum, que significa muchas aguas.
And we did come to the land which we called Bountiful, because of its much fruit and also wild honey; and all these things were prepared of the Lord that we might not perish. And we beheld the sea, which we called Irreantum, which, being interpreted, is many waters.

And it came to pass that we did pitch our tents by the seashore; and notwithstanding we had suffered many afflictions and much difficulty, yea, even so much that we cannot write them all, we were exceedingly rejoiced when we came to the seashore; and we called the place Bountiful, because of its much fruit.
Después de que yo, Nefi, estuve en la tierra de Abundancia por muchos días, la voz del Señor vino a mí, diciendo: "Levántate y sube al monte." Así que me levanté, subí al monte y oré al Señor.
And it came to pass that after I, Nephi, had been in the land of Bountiful for the space of many days, the voice of the Lord came unto me, saying: Arise, and get thee into the mountain. And it came to pass that I arose and went up into the mountain, and cried unto the Lord.
El Señor me habló, diciendo: "Tú construirás un barco de la manera que yo te mostraré, para que pueda llevar a tu pueblo a través de estas aguas."
And it came to pass that the Lord spake unto me, saying: Thou shalt construct a ship, after the manner which I shall show thee, that I may carry thy people across these waters.
Y yo dije: Señor, ¿a dónde debo ir para encontrar mineral que pueda fundir, para hacer herramientas y construir el barco tal como me lo has mostrado?
And I said: Lord, whither shall I go that I may find ore to molten, that I may make tools to construct the ship after the manner which thou hast shown unto me?
El Señor me dijo adónde debía ir para encontrar mineral y así poder hacer herramientas.
And it came to pass that the Lord told me whither I should go to find ore, that I might make tools.
Yo, Nephi, fabriqué un fuelle con pieles de animales para avivar el fuego. Después de hacer el fuelle para poder mantener el fuego encendido, golpeé dos piedras entre sí para encender el fuego.
And it came to pass that I, Nephi, did make a bellows wherewith to blow the fire, of the skins of beasts; and after I had made a bellows, that I might have wherewith to blow the fire, I did smite two stones together that I might make fire.
El Señor no nos permitió hacer mucho fuego mientras viajábamos por el desierto, porque dijo: "Haré que tu comida sepa bien para que no tengas que cocinarla."
For the Lord had not hitherto suffered that we should make much fire, as we journeyed in the wilderness; for he said: I will make thy food become sweet, that ye cook it not;
También seré tu luz en el desierto, y prepararé el camino delante de ti si guardas mis mandamientos. Mientras guardes mis mandamientos, serás guiado hacia la tierra prometida, y sabrás que soy yo quien te guía.
And I will also be your light in the wilderness; and I will prepare the way before you, if it so be that ye shall keep my commandments; wherefore, inasmuch as ye shall keep my commandments ye shall be led towards the promised land; and ye shall know that it is by me that ye are led.
Y el Señor también dijo que después de que hayas llegado a la tierra prometida, sabrás que yo, el Señor, soy Dios, y que yo, el Señor, te libré de la destrucción, y que te saqué de la tierra de Jerusalén.
Yea, and the Lord said also that: After ye have arrived in the promised land, ye shall know that I, the Lord, am God; and that I, the Lord, did deliver you from destruction; yea, that I did bring you out of the land of Jerusalem.
Así que yo, Nephi, procuré guardar los mandamientos del Señor, y animé a mis hermanos a ser fieles y diligentes.
Wherefore, I, Nephi, did strive to keep the commandments of the Lord, and I did exhort my brethren to faithfulness and diligence.

And it came to pass that I did make tools of the ore which I did molten out of the rock.
Cuando mis hermanos vieron que yo estaba a punto de construir un barco, empezaron a quejarse de mí, diciendo: "Nuestro hermano es un necio, porque piensa que puede construir un barco, y también cree que puede cruzar estas grandes aguas."
And when my brethren saw that I was about to build a ship, they began to murmur against me, saying: Our brother is a fool, for he thinketh that he can build a ship; yea, and he also thinketh that he can cross these great waters.
Así que mis hermanos se quejaron de mí y no querían trabajar, porque no creían que yo pudiera construir un barco; tampoco creían que yo era guiado por el Señor.
And thus my brethren did complain against me, and were desirous that they might not labor, for they did not believe that I could build a ship; neither would they believe that I was instructed of the Lord.
Yo, Nephi, estaba sumamente triste por lo endurecidos que eran sus corazones. Cuando vieron que yo estaba afligido, se alegraron y hasta se regocijaron por mi causa, diciendo: "Sabíamos que no podías construir un barco, porque sabíamos que te faltaba buen juicio; así que no puedes lograr una tarea tan grande."
And now it came to pass that I, Nephi, was exceedingly sorrowful because of the hardness of their hearts; and now when they saw that I began to be sorrowful they were glad in their hearts, insomuch that they did rejoice over me, saying: We knew that ye could not construct a ship, for we knew that ye were lacking in judgment; wherefore, thou canst not accomplish so great a work.
Eres igual que nuestro padre, dejándote guiar por las ideas insensatas de su corazón. Nos ha sacado de Jerusalén y hemos vagado por el desierto durante muchos años. Nuestras mujeres han trabajado duro estando embarazadas; han dado a luz en el desierto y han sufrido todo, menos la muerte. Habría sido mejor que hubieran muerto antes de salir de Jerusalén que sufrir estas dificultades.
And thou art like unto our father, led away by the foolish imaginations of his heart; yea, he hath led us out of the land of Jerusalem, and we have wandered in the wilderness for these many years; and our women have toiled, being big with child; and they have borne children in the wilderness and suffered all things, save it were death; and it would have been better that they had died before they came out of Jerusalem than to have suffered these afflictions.
Todos estos años hemos sufrido en el desierto, cuando podríamos haber disfrutado de nuestras posesiones y de la tierra de nuestra herencia, y podríamos haber sido felices.
Behold, these many years we have suffered in the wilderness, which time we might have enjoyed our possessions and the land of our inheritance; yea, and we might have been happy.
Sabemos que la gente en Jerusalén era justa porque guardaban los estatutos y juicios del Señor y todos sus mandamientos según la ley de Moisés. Así que sabemos que son justos, pero nuestro padre los ha juzgado y nos ha sacado de allí porque estuvimos dispuestos a escuchar sus palabras. Nuestro hermano es igual que él. Así fue como mis hermanos murmuraron y se quejaron contra nosotros.
And we know that the people who were in the land of Jerusalem were a righteous people; for they kept the statutes and judgments of the Lord, and all his commandments, according to the law of Moses; wherefore, we know that they are a righteous people; and our father hath judged them, and hath led us away because we would hearken unto his words; yea, and our brother is like unto him. And after this manner of language did my brethren murmur and complain against us.
Yo, Nephi, les dije: “¿Creen que nuestros antepasados, los hijos de Israel, habrían sido liberados de las manos de los egipcios si no hubieran escuchado las palabras del Señor?”
And it came to pass that I, Nephi, spake unto them, saying: Do ye believe that our fathers, who were the children of Israel, would have been led away out of the hands of the Egyptians if they had not hearkened unto the words of the Lord?
¿Crees que habrían sido liberados de la esclavitud si el Señor no le hubiera mandado a Moisés que los guiara fuera?
Yea, do ye suppose that they would have been led out of bondage, if the Lord had not commanded Moses that he should lead them out of bondage?
Tú sabes que los hijos de Israel estaban en esclavitud, y sabes que estaban cargados con tareas difíciles de soportar. Así que sabes que debió ser bueno para ellos ser liberados de la esclavitud.
Now ye know that the children of Israel were in bondage; and ye know that they were laden with tasks, which were grievous to be borne; wherefore, ye know that it must needs be a good thing for them, that they should be brought out of bondage.
Tú sabes que Moisés fue mandado por el Señor a hacer esa gran obra, y sabes que por su palabra las aguas del Mar Rojo se dividieron en ambos sentidos, y ellos pasaron por tierra seca.
Now ye know that Moses was commanded of the Lord to do that great work; and ye know that by his word the waters of the Red Sea were divided hither and thither, and they passed through on dry ground.
Tú sabes que los egipcios, que eran los ejércitos del faraón, se ahogaron en el Mar Rojo.
But ye know that the Egyptians were drowned in the Red Sea, who were the armies of Pharaoh.
Y también sabes que fueron alimentados con maná en el desierto.
And ye also know that they were fed with manna in the wilderness.
Tú también sabes que Moisés, por su palabra y el poder de Dios en él, golpeó la roca, y salió agua para que los hijos de Israel pudieran saciar su sed.
Yea, and ye also know that Moses, by his word according to the power of God which was in him, smote the rock, and there came forth water, that the children of Israel might quench their thirst.
Aunque estaban siendo guiados, con el Señor su Dios, su Redentor, yendo delante de ellos, guiándolos de día y dándoles luz de noche, y haciendo todo lo necesario para que las personas recibieran lo que necesitaban, endurecieron sus corazones, cegaron sus mentes y hablaron en contra de Moisés y en contra del Dios verdadero y viviente.
And notwithstanding they being led, the Lord their God, their Redeemer, going before them, leading them by day and giving light unto them by night, and doing all things for them which were expedient for man to receive, they hardened their hearts and blinded their minds, and reviled against Moses and against the true and living God.
Como lo prometiste, los destruiste; como lo prometiste, los guiaste; como lo prometiste, hiciste todo por ellos; y nada sucedió sino por tu palabra.
And it came to pass that according to his word he did destroy them; and according to his word he did lead them; and according to his word he did do all things for them; and there was not any thing done save it were by his word.
Después de que cruzaron el río Jordán, tú les diste poder para expulsar a los habitantes de la tierra y dispersarlos hasta su destrucción.
And after they had crossed the river Jordan he did make them mighty unto the driving out of the children of the land, yea, unto the scattering them to destruction.
¿Crees que las personas que vivían en esta tierra prometida, que fueron expulsadas por nuestros antepasados, eran justas? Te digo que no.
And now, do ye suppose that the children of this land, who were in the land of promise, who were driven out by our fathers, do ye suppose that they were righteous? Behold, I say unto you, Nay.
¿Crees que nuestros antepasados habrían sido más favorecidos que ellos si hubieran sido justos? Te digo que no.
Do ye suppose that our fathers would have been more choice than they if they had been righteous? I say unto you, Nay.
El Señor valora a todas las personas por igual; aquellos que son justos son favorecidos por Dios. Pero este pueblo rechazó cada palabra de Dios y estaba lleno de maldad, así que la plenitud de la ira de Dios cayó sobre ellos. El Señor maldijo la tierra contra ellos y la bendijo para nuestros antepasados. La maldijo contra ellos para su destrucción y la bendijo para nuestros antepasados para que pudieran tener poder sobre ella.
Behold, the Lord esteemeth all flesh in one; he that is righteous is favored of God. But behold, this people had rejected every word of God, and they were ripe in iniquity; and the fulness of the wrath of God was upon them; and the Lord did curse the land against them, and bless it unto our fathers; yea, he did curse it against them unto their destruction, and he did bless it unto our fathers unto their obtaining power over it.
El Señor ha creado la tierra para que pueda ser habitada, y ha creado a sus hijos para que puedan poseerla.
Behold, the Lord hath created the earth that it should be inhabited; and he hath created his children that they should possess it.
Él levanta una nación justa y destruye las naciones de los malvados.
And he raiseth up a righteous nation, and destroyeth the nations of the wicked.
Él guía a los justos a tierras preciosas, y destruye a los malvados, y maldice la tierra por causa de ellos.
And he leadeth away the righteous into precious lands, and the wicked he destroyeth, and curseth the land unto them for their sakes.
Él gobierna en lo alto de los cielos, porque ese es su trono, y esta tierra es el estrado de sus pies.
He ruleth high in the heavens, for it is his throne, and this earth is his footstool.
Él ama a quienes lo aceptan como su Dios. Amó a nuestros antepasados y hizo convenios con ellos—aun con Abraham, Isaac y Jacob—y recordó los convenios que había hecho, así que los sacó de la tierra de Egipto.
And he loveth those who will have him to be their God. Behold, he loved our fathers, and he covenanted with them, yea, even Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; and he remembered the covenants which he had made; wherefore, he did bring them out of the land of Egypt.
Él los disciplinó en el desierto con su vara porque endurecieron sus corazones, así como tú lo has hecho. El Señor los disciplinó por causa de sus pecados. Envió serpientes ardientes y voladoras entre ellos, y después de que fueron mordidos, les proveyó una manera de ser sanados. And he did straiten them in the wilderness with his rod; for they hardened their hearts, even as ye have; and the Lord straitened them because of their iniquity. He sent fiery flying serpents among them; and after they were bitten he prepared a way that they might be healed; and the labor which they had to perform was to look; and because of the simpleness of the way, or the easiness of it, there were many who perished.
Endurecieron su corazón de vez en cuando y hablaron en contra de Moisés y en contra de Dios. Aun así, tú sabes que fueron guiados por Su poder incomparable a la tierra prometida.
And they did harden their hearts from time to time, and they did revile against Moses, and also against God; nevertheless, ye know that they were led forth by his matchless power into the land of promise.
Ahora, después de todas estas cosas, ha llegado el momento en que se han vuelto malvados, casi por completo; y no sé si hoy están a punto de ser destruidos. Sé que ciertamente llegará el día en que deben ser destruidos, excepto unos pocos que serán llevados al cautiverio.
And now, after all these things, the time has come that they have become wicked, yea, nearly unto ripeness; and I know not but they are at this day about to be destroyed; for I know that the day must surely come that they must be destroyed, save a few only, who shall be led away into captivity.
Así que el Señor le mandó a mi padre que se fuera y entrara en el desierto. Los judíos también intentaron matarlo, y ustedes han tratado de quitarle la vida. Son asesinos en su corazón y son iguales a ellos.
Wherefore, the Lord commanded my father that he should depart into the wilderness; and the Jews also sought to take away his life; yea, and ye also have sought to take away his life; wherefore, ye are murderers in your hearts and ye are like unto them.
Eres rápido para hacer el mal pero lento para recordar al Señor tu Dios. Has visto a un ángel, y él te habló; has escuchado su voz de vez en cuando, y te ha hablado con una voz suave y apacible, pero estabas insensible y no pudiste sentir sus palabras. Así que te ha hablado con una voz como trueno, que hizo temblar la tierra como si estuviera a punto de partirse.
Ye are swift to do iniquity but slow to remember the Lord your God. Ye have seen an angel, and he spake unto you; yea, ye have heard his voice from time to time; and he hath spoken unto you in a still small voice, but ye were past feeling, that ye could not feel his words; wherefore, he has spoken unto you like unto the voice of thunder, which did cause the earth to shake as if it were to divide asunder.
También sabes que por el poder de su palabra todopoderosa él puede hacer que la tierra desaparezca, y sabes que por su palabra puede hacer que los lugares ásperos se vuelvan llanos, y que los lugares llanos se quiebren. Entonces, ¿por qué son tan duros tus corazones?
And ye also know that by the power of his almighty word he can cause the earth that it shall pass away; yea, and ye know that by his word he can cause the rough places to be made smooth, and smooth places shall be broken up. O, then, why is it, that ye can be so hard in your hearts?
Mi alma está desgarrada de angustia por causa de ti, y mi corazón está sufriendo; temo que seas desechado para siempre. Estoy tan lleno del Espíritu de Dios que mi cuerpo no tiene fuerzas.
Behold, my soul is rent with anguish because of you, and my heart is pained; I fear lest ye shall be cast off forever. Behold, I am full of the Spirit of God, insomuch that my frame has no strength.
Después de que dije estas palabras, se enojaron conmigo y quisieron arrojarme a lo profundo del mar. Cuando se acercaron para agarrarme, les dije: "En el nombre del Dios Todopoderoso, te mando que no me toques, porque estoy lleno del poder de Dios, aun hasta el consumo de mi carne. Cualquiera que ponga su mano sobre mí se secará como una caña seca y no será nada ante el poder de Dios, porque Dios lo herirá."
And now it came to pass that when I had spoken these words, they were angry with me, and were desirous to throw me into the depths of the sea; and as they came forth to lay their hands upon me I spake unto them, saying: In the name of the Almighty God, I command you that ye touch me not, for I am filled with the power of God, even unto the consuming of my flesh; and whoso shall lay his hands upon me shall wither even as a dried reed; and he shall be as naught before the power of God, for God shall smite him.
Yo, Nephi, les dije que no se quejaran más contra su padre y que no se negaran a ayudarme, porque Dios me había mandado construir un barco.
And it came to pass that I, Nephi, said unto them that they should murmur no more against their father; neither should they withhold their labor from me, for God had commanded me that I should build a ship.
Les dije que, si Dios me mandaba hacer algo, yo podía hacerlo. Si él me dijera que le dijera a esta agua: "Conviértete en tierra", se convertiría en tierra; y si yo lo dijera, así sucedería.
And I said unto them: If God had commanded me to do all things I could do them. If he should command me that I should say unto this water, be thou earth, it should be earth; and if I should say it, it would be done.
Y ahora, si el Señor tiene tanto poder y ha hecho tantos milagros entre los hijos de los hombres, ¿cómo puedes decir que no puede instruirme para construir un barco?
And now, if the Lord has such great power, and has wrought so many miracles among the children of men, how is it that he cannot instruct me, that I should build a ship?
Yo, Nephi, les dije muchas cosas a mis hermanos, tanto que se confundieron y no pudieron discutir conmigo; no se atrevieron a ponerme las manos encima ni siquiera a tocarme con sus dedos durante muchos días. No se atrevieron porque temían marchitarse delante de mí, ya que el Espíritu de Dios era tan poderoso; y así les afectaba.
And it came to pass that I, Nephi, said many things unto my brethren, insomuch that they were confounded and could not contend against me; neither durst they lay their hands upon me nor touch me with their fingers, even for the space of many days. Now they durst not do this lest they should wither before me, so powerful was the Spirit of God; and thus it had wrought upon them.
El Señor me dijo: "Extiende de nuevo tu mano hacia tus hermanos, y ellos no se marchitarán delante de ti, sino que yo los asombraré. Hago esto para que sepan que yo soy el Señor su Dios."
And it came to pass that the Lord said unto me: Stretch forth thine hand again unto thy brethren, and they shall not wither before thee, but I will shock them, saith the Lord, and this will I do, that they may know that I am the Lord their God.
Extendí mi mano hacia mis hermanos, y no se marchitaron delante de mí; pero el Señor los sacudió, tal como había dicho que lo haría.
And it came to pass that I stretched forth my hand unto my brethren, and they did not wither before me; but the Lord did shake them, even according to the word which he had spoken.
Ellos dijeron: "Sabemos con certeza que el Señor está contigo, porque sabemos que es el poder del Señor lo que nos ha sacudido." Cayeron ante mí y estaban a punto de adorarme, pero no lo permití. Les dije: "Soy tu hermano, tu hermano menor. Adora al Señor tu Dios y honra a tu padre y a tu madre para que tus días sean largos en la tierra que el Señor tu Dios te dará."
And now, they said: We know of a surety that the Lord is with thee, for we know that it is the power of the Lord that has shaken us. And they fell down before me, and were about to worship me, but I would not suffer them, saying: I am thy brother, yea, even thy younger brother; wherefore, worship the Lord thy God, and honor thy father and thy mother, that thy days may be long in the land which the Lord thy God shall give thee.
