Resumen
Nefi explica que está haciendo dos conjuntos de registros: uno para asuntos espirituales y otro para la historia, obedeciendo el mandato de Dios por razones que no comprende completamente.
Mi padre vio, oyó y habló de todas estas cosas mientras vivía en una tienda en el valle de Lemuel, y también de muchas otras cosas que no pueden ser escritas en estas planchas.
And all these things did my father see, and hear, and speak, as he dwelt in a tent, in the valley of Lemuel, and also a great many more things, which cannot be written upon these plates.
Ahora bien, como he hablado acerca de estas planchas, no son aquellas en las que hago un registro completo de la historia de mi pueblo. Las planchas en las que hago un relato completo las he llamado Nephi, así que se les llama las planchas de Nephi, según mi propio nombre. Estas planchas también se llaman las planchas de Nephi.
And now, as I have spoken concerning these plates, behold they are not the plates upon which I make a full account of the history of my people; for the plates upon which I make a full account of my people I have given the name of Nephi; wherefore, they are called the plates of Nephi, after mine own name; and these plates also are called the plates of Nephi.
Sin embargo, he recibido un mandamiento del Señor de hacer estas planchas con el propósito específico de registrar un relato del ministerio de mi pueblo.
Nevertheless, I have received a commandment of the Lord that I should make these plates, for the special purpose that there should be an account engraven of the ministry of my people.

Upon the other plates should be engraven an account of the reign of the kings, and the wars and contentions of my people; wherefore these plates are for the more part of the ministry; and the other plates are for the more part of the reign of the kings and the wars and contentions of my people.
El Señor me ha mandado hacer estas planchas con un propósito sabio que solo Él conoce, un propósito que yo no conozco.
Wherefore, the Lord hath commanded me to make these plates for a wise purpose in him, which purpose I know not.
Pero el Señor sabe todas las cosas desde el principio; así que él prepara un camino para realizar todas sus obras entre los hijos de los hombres, porque tiene todo el poder para cumplir todas sus palabras. Y así es. Amén.
But the Lord knoweth all things from the beginning; wherefore, he prepareth a way to accomplish all his works among the children of men; for behold, he hath all power unto the fulfilling of all his words. And thus it is. Amen.
