Resumen
Lehi enseña a Jacob sobre la necesidad de la oposición en todas las cosas, el propósito de la Caída, el albedrío y la redención por medio del Mesías, exhortando a sus hijos a escoger la libertad y la vida eterna.
Jacob, te hablo a ti. Tú eres mi primogénito durante mis pruebas en el desierto. En tu niñez has sufrido aflicciones y mucha tristeza por la dureza de tus hermanos.
And now, Jacob, I speak unto you: Thou art my first-born in the days of my tribulation in the wilderness. And behold, in thy childhood thou hast suffered afflictions and much sorrow, because of the rudeness of thy brethren.
Jacob, mi primogénito en el desierto, tú conoces la grandeza de Dios, y él convertirá tus aflicciones en bendiciones para ti.
Nevertheless, Jacob, my first-born in the wilderness, thou knowest the greatness of God; and he shall consecrate thine afflictions for thy gain.
Tu alma será bendecida, y vivirás seguro junto a tu hermano Nephi. Pasarás tus días sirviendo a tu Dios. Yo sé que eres redimido por la rectitud de tu Redentor, porque has visto que en la plenitud de los tiempos él vendrá para traer salvación a las personas.
Wherefore, thy soul shall be blessed, and thou shalt dwell safely with thy brother, Nephi; and thy days shall be spent in the service of thy God. Wherefore, I know that thou art redeemed, because of the righteousness of thy Redeemer; for thou hast beheld that in the fulness of time he cometh to bring salvation unto men.
Has visto su gloria en tu juventud; eres bendecido igual que aquellos a quienes él ministrará en persona, porque el Espíritu es el mismo ayer, hoy y siempre. El camino ha sido preparado desde la caída del hombre, y la salvación es gratuita.
And thou hast beheld in thy youth his glory; wherefore, thou art blessed even as they unto whom he shall minister in the flesh; for the Spirit is the same, yesterday, today, and forever. And the way is prepared from the fall of man, and salvation is free.
Se les enseña lo suficiente para distinguir entre el bien y el mal. Se les da la ley, pero nadie es justificado por la ley; más bien, las personas son condenadas por ella. Por la ley temporal, son separados, y por la ley espiritual, pierden lo bueno y llegan a ser miserables para siempre.
And men are instructed sufficiently that they know good from evil. And the law is given unto men. And by the law no flesh is justified; or, by the law men are cut off. Yea, by the temporal law they were cut off; and also, by the spiritual law they perish from that which is good, and become miserable forever.
La redención viene por medio del Santo Mesías, porque él está lleno de gracia y verdad.
Wherefore, redemption cometh in and through the Holy Messiah; for he is full of grace and truth.
Él se ofrece a sí mismo como sacrificio por el pecado para cumplir la ley para todos los que tienen un corazón quebrantado y un espíritu contrito; y para nadie más pueden cumplirse los fines de la ley.
Behold, he offereth himself a sacrifice for sin, to answer the ends of the law, unto all those who have a broken heart and a contrite spirit; and unto none else can the ends of the law be answered.
Es tan importante dar a conocer estas cosas a la gente de la tierra, para que entiendan que nadie puede vivir en la presencia de Dios sino por los méritos, la misericordia y la gracia del Santo Mesías, quien entrega su vida en la carne y la toma de nuevo por el poder del Espíritu, para poder realizar la resurrección de los muertos, siendo él el primero en resucitar.
Wherefore, how great the importance to make these things known unto the inhabitants of the earth, that they may know that there is no flesh that can dwell in the presence of God, save it be through the merits, and mercy, and grace of the Holy Messiah, who layeth down his life according to the flesh, and taketh it again by the power of the Spirit, that he may bring to pass the resurrection of the dead, being the first that should rise.
Él es las primicias para Dios, porque intercederá por todos los hijos de los hombres; y los que crean en él serán salvos.
Wherefore, he is the first-fruits unto God, inasmuch as he shall make intercession for all the children of men; and they that believe in him shall be saved.
Por la intercesión hecha por todos, todas las personas se acercan a Dios y permanecen en su presencia para ser juzgadas por él según la verdad y la santidad que hay en él. Los propósitos de la ley dada por el Santo conducen al castigo que está establecido, y ese castigo es opuesto a la felicidad que también está establecida, para cumplir los propósitos de la expiación.
And because of the intercession for all, all men come unto God; wherefore, they stand in the presence of him to be judged of him according to the truth and holiness which is in him. Wherefore, the ends of the law which the Holy One hath given, unto the inflicting of the punishment which is affixed, which punishment that is affixed is in opposition to that of the happiness which is affixed, to answer the ends of the atonement—
Debe haber oposición en todas las cosas. Si no fuera así, mi primogénito en el desierto, no podría haber justicia ni maldad, ni santidad ni miseria, ni bien ni mal. Así que todo tendría que fusionarse en uno solo; y si todo fuera una sola cosa, permanecería muerto, sin tener vida ni muerte, ni corrupción ni incorrupción, ni felicidad ni miseria, ni sensación ni falta de sensación.
For it must needs be, that there is an opposition in all things. If not so, my first-born in the wilderness, righteousness could not be brought to pass, neither wickedness, neither holiness nor misery, neither good nor bad. Wherefore, all things must needs be a compound in one; wherefore, if it should be one body it must needs remain as dead, having no life neither death, nor corruption nor incorruption, happiness nor misery, neither sense nor insensibility.
Así que habría sido creado en vano; no habría habido propósito en su creación. Esto destruiría la sabiduría de Dios, sus propósitos eternos, y también su poder, misericordia y justicia.
Wherefore, it must needs have been created for a thing of naught; wherefore there would have been no purpose in the end of its creation. Wherefore, this thing must needs destroy the wisdom of God and his eternal purposes, and also the power, and the mercy, and the justice of God.
Si dices que no hay ley, también debes decir que no hay pecado. Si dices que no hay pecado, también debes decir que no hay rectitud. Si no hay rectitud, no hay felicidad. Si no hay rectitud ni felicidad, no hay castigo ni miseria. Si estas cosas no existen, no hay Dios. Si no hay Dios, nosotros no existimos, ni tampoco la tierra, porque no podría haber habido creación—nada para actuar ni para ser actuado. Así que, todo habría desaparecido.
And if ye shall say there is no law, ye shall also say there is no sin. If ye shall say there is no sin, ye shall also say there is no righteousness. And if there be no righteousness there be no happiness. And if there be no righteousness nor happiness there be no punishment nor misery. And if these things are not there is no God. And if there is no God we are not, neither the earth; for there could have been no creation of things, neither to act nor to be acted upon; wherefore, all things must have vanished away.
Ahora bien, hijos míos, les digo estas cosas para su beneficio y aprendizaje; porque hay un Dios, y Él ha creado todas las cosas: los cielos y la tierra, y todo lo que hay en ellos, tanto las cosas que actúan como las cosas sobre las que se actúa.
And now, my sons, I speak unto you these things for your profit and learning; for there is a God, and he hath created all things, both the heavens and the earth, and all things that in them are, both things to act and things to be acted upon.
Para cumplir con sus propósitos eternos para la humanidad, después de que creó a nuestros primeros padres, los animales del campo, las aves del cielo y todo lo demás que fue creado, tenía que haber oposición—como el fruto prohibido en oposición al árbol de la vida, siendo uno dulce y el otro amargo.
And to bring about his eternal purposes in the end of man, after he had created our first parents, and the beasts of the field and the fowls of the air, and in fine, all things which are created, it must needs be that there was an opposition; even the forbidden fruit in opposition to the tree of life; the one being sweet and the other bitter.
Así que el Señor Dios les dio a las personas la capacidad de actuar por sí mismas. Las personas no podrían actuar por sí mismas a menos que fueran influenciadas por un lado o por el otro.
Wherefore, the Lord God gave unto man that he should act for himself. Wherefore, man could not act for himself save it should be that he was enticed by the one or the other.
Yo, Lehi, según lo que he leído, creo que un ángel de Dios, como está escrito, cayó del cielo y se convirtió en un demonio porque buscó lo que era malo ante Dios.
And I, Lehi, according to the things which I have read, must needs suppose that an angel of God, according to that which is written, had fallen from heaven; wherefore, he became a devil, having sought that which was evil before God.

And because he had fallen from heaven, and had become miserable forever, he sought also the misery of all mankind. Wherefore, he said unto Eve, yea, even that old serpent, who is the devil, who is the father of all lies, wherefore he said: Partake of the forbidden fruit, and ye shall not die, but ye shall be as God, knowing good and evil.

And after Adam and Eve had partaken of the forbidden fruit they were driven out of the garden of Eden, to till the earth.
Han tenido hijos: la familia de toda la tierra.
And they have brought forth children; yea, even the family of all the earth.
Los días de los hijos de los hombres fueron prolongados según la voluntad de Dios para que pudieran arrepentirse mientras estuvieran en la carne. Su condición se convirtió en un tiempo de probación, y sus vidas fueron alargadas conforme a los mandamientos que el Señor Dios les dio. Él mandó que todos debían arrepentirse, porque mostró a todos que estaban perdidos por la transgresión de sus padres.
And the days of the children of men were prolonged, according to the will of God, that they might repent while in the flesh; wherefore, their state became a state of probation, and their time was lengthened, according to the commandments which the Lord God gave unto the children of men. For he gave commandment that all men must repent; for he showed unto all men that they were lost, because of the transgression of their parents.
Si Adán no hubiera pecado, no habría caído y se habría quedado en el jardín de Edén. Todo lo que fue creado habría permanecido en el mismo estado en que fue hecho al principio; habrían permanecido así para siempre, sin fin.
And now, behold, if Adam had not transgressed he would not have fallen, but he would have remained in the garden of Eden. And all things which were created must have remained in the same state in which they were after they were created; and they must have remained forever, and had no end.
Y no habrían tenido hijos; habrían permanecido en un estado de inocencia, sin gozo porque no conocían la miseria, sin hacer el bien porque no conocían el pecado.
And they would have had no children; wherefore they would have remained in a state of innocence, having no joy, for they knew no misery; doing no good, for they knew no sin.
Todas las cosas se han hecho según la sabiduría de aquel que lo sabe todo.
But behold, all things have been done in the wisdom of him who knoweth all things.
Adán cayó para que las personas pudieran existir, y las personas existen para que puedan tener gozo.
Adam fell that men might be; and men are, that they might have joy.
El Mesías viene en la plenitud de los tiempos para redimir a los hijos de los hombres de la caída. Y porque han sido redimidos de la caída, se han vuelto libres para siempre, conociendo el bien y el mal, para actuar por sí mismos y no ser obligados a actuar, excepto por el castigo de la ley en el gran y último día, según los mandamientos que Dios ha dado.
And the Messiah cometh in the fulness of time, that he may redeem the children of men from the fall. And because that they are redeemed from the fall they have become free forever, knowing good from evil; to act for themselves and not to be acted upon, save it be by the punishment of the law at the great and last day, according to the commandments which God hath given.
Las personas son libres en su vida física, y se les ha dado todo lo necesario. Son libres de escoger la libertad y la vida eterna por medio del gran Mediador de toda la humanidad, o de escoger la cautividad y la muerte según la cautividad y el poder del diablo, porque él busca hacer que todos sean tan desdichados como él.
Wherefore, men are free according to the flesh; and all things are given them which are expedient unto man. And they are free to choose liberty and eternal life, through the great Mediator of all men, or to choose captivity and death, according to the captivity and power of the devil; for he seeketh that all men might be miserable like unto himself.
Ahora, hijos míos, quiero que mires al gran Mediador, escuches sus grandes mandamientos, seas fiel a sus palabras y escojas la vida eterna conforme a la voluntad de su Santo Espíritu.
And now, my sons, I would that ye should look to the great Mediator, and hearken unto his great commandments; and be faithful unto his words, and choose eternal life, according to the will of his Holy Spirit;
Y no escojas la muerte eterna, siguiendo los deseos de la carne y el mal que hay en ella, lo cual da poder al espíritu del diablo para atraparte, para llevarte al infierno, para que él pueda gobernarte en su propio reino.
And not choose eternal death, according to the will of the flesh and the evil which is therein, which giveth the spirit of the devil power to captivate, to bring you down to hell, that he may reign over you in his own kingdom.
He hablado estas pocas palabras a todos ustedes, mis hijos, en los últimos días de mi vida; y he escogido la mejor parte, como dijo el profeta. Mi único propósito es su bienestar eterno. Amén.
I have spoken these few words unto you all, my sons, in the last days of my probation; and I have chosen the good part, according to the words of the prophet. And I have none other object save it be the everlasting welfare of your souls. Amen.
