Resumen
Lehi insta a sus hijos a guardar los mandamientos de Dios, les advierte sobre las consecuencias de la rebelión y bendice la tierra prometida como un lugar de seguridad y prosperidad para los justos.
Después de que yo, Nefi, terminé de enseñar a mis hermanos, nuestro padre Lehi también les habló y les recordó las grandes cosas que el Señor había hecho por ellos al sacarlos de Jerusalén.
And now it came to pass that after I, Nephi, had made an end of teaching my brethren, our father, Lehi, also spake many things unto them, and rehearsed unto them, how great things the Lord had done for them in bringing them out of the land of Jerusalem.
Les habló acerca de sus rebeliones mientras estaban en el agua, y sobre la misericordia de Dios al salvar sus vidas para que no fueran tragados por el mar.
And he spake unto them concerning their rebellions upon the waters, and the mercies of God in sparing their lives, that they were not swallowed up in the sea.
También les habló acerca de la tierra prometida que habían recibido, y de cuán misericordioso había sido el Señor al advertirles que debían salir de Jerusalén.
And he also spake unto them concerning the land of promise, which they had obtained—how merciful the Lord had been in warning us that we should flee out of the land of Jerusalem.
Él dijo: "He visto una visión, y sé que Jerusalén ha sido destruida. Si nos hubiéramos quedado en Jerusalén, también habríamos muerto."
For, behold, said he, I have seen a vision, in which I know that Jerusalem is destroyed; and had we remained in Jerusalem we should also have perished.
Él dijo que a pesar de nuestras dificultades, hemos recibido una tierra prometida—una tierra mejor que cualquier otra. El Señor Dios me ha prometido que esta tierra será una herencia para mis descendientes. El Señor ha hecho este convenio conmigo y con mis hijos para siempre, y también con todos aquellos que sean traídos aquí de otros países por la guía del Señor.
But, said he, notwithstanding our afflictions, we have obtained a land of promise, a land which is choice above all other lands; a land which the Lord God hath covenanted with me should be a land for the inheritance of my seed. Yea, the Lord hath covenanted this land unto me, and to my children forever, and also all those who should be led out of other countries by the hand of the Lord.
Yo, Lehi, profetizo por el poder del Espíritu que está en mí que nadie vendrá a esta tierra a menos que sea traído por la mano del Señor.
Wherefore, I, Lehi, prophesy according to the workings of the Spirit which is in me, that there shall none come into this land save they shall be brought by the hand of the Lord.
Esta tierra está apartada para aquellos a quienes Dios trae aquí. Si le sirven conforme a los mandamientos que Él ha dado, será una tierra de libertad para ellos, y nunca serán llevados a la cautividad. Si lo son, será por causa de su iniquidad; porque si la maldad se extiende, la tierra será maldita por causa de ellos, pero siempre será bendita para los justos.
Wherefore, this land is consecrated unto him whom he shall bring. And if it so be that they shall serve him according to the commandments which he hath given, it shall be a land of liberty unto them; wherefore, they shall never be brought down into captivity; if so, it shall be because of iniquity; for if iniquity shall abound cursed shall be the land for their sakes, but unto the righteous it shall be blessed forever.
Es sabio que esta tierra siga siendo desconocida para otras naciones, porque muchas naciones la invadirían y no quedaría lugar para una herencia.
And behold, it is wisdom that this land should be kept as yet from the knowledge of other nations; for behold, many nations would overrun the land, that there would be no place for an inheritance.
Yo, Lehi, he recibido una promesa de que mientras aquellos a quienes el Señor Dios saque de Jerusalén guarden Sus mandamientos, prosperarán en esta tierra. Serán mantenidos separados de todas las demás naciones para que puedan poseer esta tierra para sí mismos. Si guardan Sus mandamientos, serán bendecidos en esta tierra, y nadie los molestará ni les quitará su herencia; vivirán aquí seguros para siempre.
Wherefore, I, Lehi, have obtained a promise, that inasmuch as those whom the Lord God shall bring out of the land of Jerusalem shall keep his commandments, they shall prosper upon the face of this land; and they shall be kept from all other nations, that they may possess this land unto themselves. And if it so be that they shall keep his commandments they shall be blessed upon the face of this land, and there shall be none to molest them, nor to take away the land of their inheritance; and they shall dwell safely forever.
Cuando llegue el momento en que caigan en la incredulidad, después de haber recibido tan grandes bendiciones del Señor—teniendo conocimiento de la creación de la tierra y de todos los pueblos, conociendo las grandes y maravillosas obras del Señor desde el principio; habiendo recibido poder para hacer todas las cosas por la fe; teniendo todos los mandamientos desde el principio, y siendo llevados por su infinita bondad a esta preciosa tierra prometida—si llega el día en que rechacen al Santo de Israel, el verdadero Mesías, su Redentor y su Dios, entonces los juicios del Dios justo vendrán sobre ellos.
But behold, when the time cometh that they shall dwindle in unbelief, after they have received so great blessings from the hand of the Lord—having a knowledge of the creation of the earth, and all men, knowing the great and marvelous works of the Lord from the creation of the world; having power given them to do all things by faith; having all the commandments from the beginning, and having been brought by his infinite goodness into this precious land of promise—behold, I say, if the day shall come that they will reject the Holy One of Israel, the true Messiah, their Redeemer and their God, behold, the judgments of him that is just shall rest upon them.
Él traerá otras naciones hacia ellos, les dará poder a esas naciones, les quitará sus tierras y hará que sean esparcidos y heridos.
Yea, he will bring other nations unto them, and he will give unto them power, and he will take away from them the lands of their possessions, and he will cause them to be scattered and smitten.
A medida que una generación pase a otra, habrá derramamiento de sangre y grandes calamidades entre ellos. Hijos míos, quiero que recuerden y escuchen mis palabras.
Yea, as one generation passeth to another there shall be bloodsheds, and great visitations among them; wherefore, my sons, I would that ye would remember; yea, I would that ye would hearken unto my words.
Ojalá despertaras—despierta de un sueño profundo, incluso del sueño del infierno, y sacúdete esas terribles cadenas que te sujetan, las cadenas que atan a las personas y las arrastran cautivas a las profundidades eternas de miseria y dolor.
O that ye would awake; awake from a deep sleep, yea, even from the sleep of hell, and shake off the awful chains by which ye are bound, which are the chains which bind the children of men, that they are carried away captive down to the eternal gulf of misery and woe.
Despierta y levántate del polvo, y escucha las palabras de un padre tembloroso, cuyo cuerpo pronto pondrás en la fría y silenciosa tumba, de la cual nadie puede regresar; en solo unos pocos días más, yo iré por el camino de toda la tierra.
Awake! and arise from the dust, and hear the words of a trembling parent, whose limbs ye must soon lay down in the cold and silent grave, from whence no traveler can return; a few more days and I go the way of all the earth.
El Señor ha redimido mi alma del infierno; he visto su gloria, y estoy rodeado para siempre por los brazos de su amor.
But behold, the Lord hath redeemed my soul from hell; I have beheld his glory, and I am encircled about eternally in the arms of his love.
Quiero que recuerdes seguir los estatutos y juicios del Señor; esto ha sido la preocupación de mi alma desde el principio.
And I desire that ye should remember to observe the statutes and the judgments of the Lord; behold, this hath been the anxiety of my soul from the beginning.
Mi corazón se ha sentido abrumado por la tristeza en ocasiones, porque he temido que, por la dureza de vuestros corazones, el Señor tu Dios venga sobre ti con toda la plenitud de su ira, y que puedas ser apartado y destruido para siempre.
My heart hath been weighed down with sorrow from time to time, for I have feared, lest for the hardness of your hearts the Lord your God should come out in the fulness of his wrath upon you, that ye be cut off and destroyed forever;
O que venga sobre ti una maldición por muchas generaciones; y que seas afligido por la guerra y el hambre, seas odiado y seas guiado por la voluntad y cautiverio del diablo.
Or, that a cursing should come upon you for the space of many generations; and ye are visited by sword, and by famine, and are hated, and are led according to the will and captivity of the devil.
Hijos míos, espero que estas cosas no les sucedan a ustedes, sino que sean un pueblo escogido y favorecido por el Señor. Que se haga su voluntad, porque sus caminos son justos para siempre.
O my sons, that these things might not come upon you, but that ye might be a choice and a favored people of the Lord. But behold, his will be done; for his ways are righteousness forever.
Y él ha dicho que mientras guardes mis mandamientos, prosperarás en la tierra; pero si no guardas mis mandamientos, serás apartado de mi presencia.
And he hath said that: Inasmuch as ye shall keep my commandments ye shall prosper in the land; but inasmuch as ye will not keep my commandments ye shall be cut off from my presence.
Ahora, para que yo pueda tener gozo en ustedes y dejar este mundo con un corazón alegre por causa de ustedes, y no descender a la tumba con dolor y tristeza, levántense del polvo, hijos míos, y sean hombres. Sean decididos, unidos en mente y corazón en todo, para que no sean llevados al cautiverio.
And now that my soul might have joy in you, and that my heart might leave this world with gladness because of you, that I might not be brought down with grief and sorrow to the grave, arise from the dust, my sons, and be men, and be determined in one mind and in one heart, united in all things, that ye may not come down into captivity;
Para que no seas maldecido con una maldición severa, y para que no atraigas sobre ti la ira de un Dios justo, lo que llevaría a la destrucción—aun la destrucción eterna tanto del alma como del cuerpo.
That ye may not be cursed with a sore cursing; and also, that ye may not incur the displeasure of a just God upon you, unto the destruction, yea, the eternal destruction of both soul and body.
Despierten, hijos míos; pónganse la armadura de la rectitud. Sacúdanse las cadenas que los atan, salgan de la oscuridad y levántense del polvo.
Awake, my sons; put on the armor of righteousness. Shake off the chains with which ye are bound, and come forth out of obscurity, and arise from the dust.
No te rebeles más contra tu hermano, cuyas ideas han sido inspiradas y quien ha guardado los mandamientos desde que salimos de Jerusalén. Él ha sido un instrumento en las manos de Dios para guiarnos a la tierra prometida. Si no fuera por él, habríamos muerto de hambre en el desierto. Aun así, trataste de quitarle la vida, y él ha sufrido mucha tristeza por tu causa.
Rebel no more against your brother, whose views have been glorious, and who hath kept the commandments from the time that we left Jerusalem; and who hath been an instrument in the hands of God, in bringing us forth into the land of promise; for were it not for him, we must have perished with hunger in the wilderness; nevertheless, ye sought to take away his life; yea, and he hath suffered much sorrow because of you.
Tengo muchísimo miedo y tiemblo a causa de ti, preocupado de que él pueda sufrir de nuevo; tú lo has acusado de buscar poder y autoridad sobre ti, pero yo sé que él no ha buscado poder ni autoridad sobre ti. Él ha buscado la gloria de Dios y tu bienestar eterno.
And I exceedingly fear and tremble because of you, lest he shall suffer again; for behold, ye have accused him that he sought power and authority over you; but I know that he hath not sought for power nor authority over you, but he hath sought the glory of God, and your own eternal welfare.
Te has quejado porque te ha hablado claramente. Dices que ha sido duro; dices que ha estado enojado contigo. Pero su severidad era el poder de la palabra de Dios que estaba en él, y lo que tú llamas enojo era la verdad, según lo que hay en Dios, que él no podía callar, hablando con valentía sobre tus pecados.
And ye have murmured because he hath been plain unto you. Ye say that he hath used sharpness; ye say that he hath been angry with you; but behold, his sharpness was the sharpness of the power of the word of God, which was in him; and that which ye call anger was the truth, according to that which is in God, which he could not restrain, manifesting boldly concerning your iniquities.
El poder de Dios tenía que estar con él, hasta el punto de que te mandó obedecer. Pero en realidad no era él—era el Espíritu del Señor en él quien abrió su boca, así que no pudo quedarse callado.
And it must needs be that the power of God must be with him, even unto his commanding you that ye must obey. But behold, it was not he, but it was the Spirit of the Lord which was in him, which opened his mouth to utterance that he could not shut it.
Ahora bien, mi hijo Laman, y también Lemuel y Sam, y mis hijos que son los hijos de Ismael, si escuchan la voz de Nephi no perecerán. Si lo escuchan, les dejo una bendición, incluso mi primera bendición.
And now my son, Laman, and also Lemuel and Sam, and also my sons who are the sons of Ishmael, behold, if ye will hearken unto the voice of Nephi ye shall not perish. And if ye will hearken unto him I leave unto you a blessing, yea, even my first blessing.
Pero si no quieres escucharlo, quitaré mi primera bendición, sí, mi bendición, y reposará sobre él.
But if ye will not hearken unto him I take away my first blessing, yea, even my blessing, and it shall rest upon him.
Ahora Zoram, te hablo a ti. Fuiste el siervo de Laban; sin embargo, has sido sacado de la tierra de Jerusalén, y sé que eres un amigo verdadero para mi hijo Nephi, para siempre.
And now Zoram, I speak unto you: Behold, thou art the servant of Laban; nevertheless, thou hast been brought out of the land of Jerusalem, and I know that thou art a true friend unto my son, Nephi, forever.
Porque has sido fiel, tus descendientes serán bendecidos junto con los de él, y vivirán en prosperidad en esta tierra por mucho tiempo. Nada dañará ni perturbará su prosperidad aquí, a menos que haya maldad entre ellos.
Wherefore, because thou hast been faithful thy seed shall be blessed with his seed, that they dwell in prosperity long upon the face of this land; and nothing, save it shall be iniquity among them, shall harm or disturb their prosperity upon the face of this land forever.
Si guardas los mandamientos del Señor, el Señor ha apartado esta tierra para asegurar la seguridad de tus descendientes junto con los descendientes de mi hijo.
Wherefore, if ye shall keep the commandments of the Lord, the Lord hath consecrated this land for the security of thy seed with the seed of my son.
