Resumen

Jesús llama e instruye a los doce discípulos, enseña las Bienaventuranzas, aclara y cumple la ley de Moisés, y exhorta al pueblo a amar a los demás y esforzarse por la perfección.

Después que Jesús terminó de hablar con Nephi y los otros que habían sido llamados—eran doce en total quienes habían recibido poder y autoridad para bautizar—extendió su mano hacia la multitud y dijo: “Bienaventurados son si escuchan las palabras de estos doce que he escogido de entre ustedes para servirles y ministrarles. Les he dado poder para bautizarlos con agua. Después de que sean bautizados con agua, yo los bautizaré con fuego y con el Espíritu Santo. Bienaventurados son si creen en mí y se bautizan después de haberme visto y saber que yo soy.”

And it came to pass that when Jesus had spoken these words unto Nephi, and to those who had been called, (now the number of them who had been called, and received power and authority to baptize, was twelve) and behold, he stretched forth his hand unto the multitude, and cried unto them, saying: Blessed are ye if ye shall give heed unto the words of these twelve whom I have chosen from among you to minister unto you, and to be your servants; and unto them I have given power that they may baptize you with water; and after that ye are baptized with water, behold, I will baptize you with fire and with the Holy Ghost; therefore blessed are ye if ye shall believe in me and be baptized, after that ye have seen me and know that I am.

Aún más benditos son los que creen tus palabras porque testificas que me has visto y sabes que existo. Benditos son los que creen tus palabras, se humillan profundamente y se bautizan, porque serán visitados con fuego y con el Espíritu Santo y recibirán el perdón de sus pecados.

And again, more blessed are they who shall believe in your words because that ye shall testify that ye have seen me, and that ye know that I am. Yea, blessed are they who shall believe in your words, and come down into the depths of humility and be baptized, for they shall be visited with fire and with the Holy Ghost, and shall receive a remission of their sins.

Bienaventurados los pobres en espíritu que vienen a mí, porque de ellos es el reino de los cielos.

Yea, blessed are the poor in spirit who come unto me, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Bienaventurados todos los que lloran, porque ellos serán consolados.

Bienaventurados los mansos, porque ellos heredarán la tierra.

Bienaventurados todos los que tienen hambre y sed de justicia, porque serán llenos del Espíritu Santo.

And blessed are all they who do hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled with the Holy Ghost.

Bienaventurados los misericordiosos, porque ellos recibirán misericordia.

Bienaventurados todos los de corazón puro, porque ellos verán a Dios.

Bienaventurados todos los pacificadores, porque serán llamados hijos de Dios.

And blessed are all the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God.

Bienaventurados todos los que son perseguidos por causa de mí, porque de ellos es el reino de los cielos.

And blessed are all they who are persecuted for my name’s sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Eres bendecido cuando la gente te insulta, te persigue y dice toda clase de maldades contra ti falsamente por causa de mí.

And blessed are ye when men shall revile you and persecute, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake;

Tendrás gran gozo y te alegrarás muchísimo, porque tu recompensa en los cielos será grande. De la misma manera persiguieron a los profetas que vinieron antes de ti.

For ye shall have great joy and be exceedingly glad, for great shall be your reward in heaven; for so persecuted they the prophets who were before you.

De cierto te digo, te he hecho la sal de la tierra; pero si la sal pierde su sabor, ¿con qué se salará la tierra? La sal ya no sirve para nada, sino para ser echada fuera y pisoteada por la gente.

Verily, verily, I say unto you, I give unto you to be the salt of the earth; but if the salt shall lose its savor wherewith shall the earth be salted? The salt shall be thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out and to be trodden under foot of men.

Te digo la verdad, te he hecho para que seas la luz para este pueblo. Una ciudad edificada sobre un monte no se puede esconder.

Verily, verily, I say unto you, I give unto you to be the light of this people. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid.

¿Acaso alguien enciende una vela y la pone debajo de un canasto? No, la pone en un candelero, y así alumbra a todos los que están en la casa.

Behold, do men light a candle and put it under a bushel? Nay, but on a candlestick, and it giveth light to all that are in the house;

Deja que tu luz brille delante de estas personas, para que vean tus buenas obras y den gloria a tu Padre que está en los cielos.

Therefore let your light so shine before this people, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

No pienses que he venido para destruir la ley o los profetas. No he venido para destruir, sino para cumplir.

Think not that I am come to destroy the law or the prophets. I am not come to destroy but to fulfil;

De cierto te digo que ni una jota ni una tilde ha pasado de la ley, sino que en mí todo se ha cumplido.

For verily I say unto you, one jot nor tittle hath not passed away from the law, but in me it hath all been fulfilled.

Te he dado la ley y los mandamientos de mi Padre, para que creas en mí, te arrepientas de tus pecados y vengas a mí con un corazón quebrantado y un espíritu contrito. Tienes los mandamientos delante de ti, y la ley se ha cumplido.

And behold, I have given you the law and the commandments of my Father, that ye shall believe in me, and that ye shall repent of your sins, and come unto me with a broken heart and a contrite spirit. Behold, ye have the commandments before you, and the law is fulfilled.

Así que ven a mí y sé salvo; porque te digo la verdad, a menos que guardes los mandamientos que ahora te he dado, no entrarás en el reino de los cielos.

Therefore come unto me and be ye saved; for verily I say unto you, that except ye shall keep my commandments, which I have commanded you at this time, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.

Has oído que se dijo en tiempos antiguos, y también está escrito delante de ti, que no debes matar, y cualquiera que mate estará en peligro del juicio de Dios.

Ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, and it is also written before you, that thou shalt not kill, and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment of God;

Pero yo te digo que cualquiera que se enoje con su hermano estará en peligro de juicio. Y cualquiera que le diga a su hermano: “Raca”, estará en peligro ante el concilio; y cualquiera que le diga: “Necio”, estará en peligro del fuego del infierno.

But I say unto you, that whosoever is angry with his brother shall be in danger of his judgment. And whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council; and whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.

Así que si vienes a mí, o quieres venir a mí, y recuerdas que tu hermano tiene algo contra ti—

Therefore, if ye shall come unto me, or shall desire to come unto me, and rememberest that thy brother hast aught against thee—

Ve primero a tu hermano y reconcíliate con él. Luego ven a mí con todo tu corazón, y yo te recibiré.

Go thy way unto thy brother, and first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come unto me with full purpose of heart, and I will receive you.

Arregla tus asuntos pronto con tu adversario mientras vas con él por el camino, para que no te entregue y termines siendo echado en la cárcel.

Agree with thine adversary quickly while thou art in the way with him, lest at any time he shall get thee, and thou shalt be cast into prison.

De cierto te digo, no saldrás de allí hasta que hayas pagado el último senine. Y mientras estés en la prisión, ¿puedes pagar siquiera un senine? De cierto te digo, no.

Verily, verily, I say unto thee, thou shalt by no means come out thence until thou hast paid the uttermost senine. And while ye are in prison can ye pay even one senine? Verily, verily, I say unto you, Nay.

Behold, it is written by them of old time, that thou shalt not commit adultery;

Pero yo te digo que cualquiera que mira a una mujer con deseo ya ha cometido adulterio con ella en su corazón.

But I say unto you, that whosoever looketh on a woman, to lust after her, hath committed adultery already in his heart.

Te doy un mandamiento: no permitas que ninguna de estas cosas entre en tu corazón.

Behold, I give unto you a commandment, that ye suffer none of these things to enter into your heart;

Es mejor para ti negarte a ti mismo estas cosas y tomar tu cruz que ser echado al infierno.

For it is better that ye should deny yourselves of these things, wherein ye will take up your cross, than that ye should be cast into hell.

Se ha escrito que cualquiera que se divorcie de su esposa debe darle un certificado de divorcio.

It hath been written, that whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement.

De cierto te digo que cualquiera que se divorcia de su esposa, excepto por causa de inmoralidad sexual, la hace cometer adulterio; y el que se casa con una mujer divorciada comete adulterio.

Verily, verily, I say unto you, that whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery; and whoso shall marry her who is divorced committeth adultery.

También está escrito: No jures en falso, sino cumple los juramentos que haces al Señor.

And again it is written, thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths;

De cierto te digo, no jures en absoluto; ni por el cielo, porque es el trono de Dios.

But verily, verily, I say unto you, swear not at all; neither by heaven, for it is God’s throne;

No jures por la tierra, porque es el estrado de sus pies.

Nor by the earth, for it is his footstool;

Y no debes jurar por tu cabeza, porque no puedes hacer que ni un solo cabello sea blanco o negro.

Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair black or white;

Que tus palabras sean simplemente "sí" o "no"; cualquier cosa más que esto viene del mal.

But let your communication be Yea, yea; Nay, nay; for whatsoever cometh of more than these is evil.

Está escrito: ojo por ojo, y diente por diente.

And behold, it is written, an eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth;

Pero yo te digo: no resistas al que es malo. Si alguien te da una bofetada en la mejilla derecha, ofrécele también la otra.

But I say unto you, that ye shall not resist evil, but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also;

Si alguien te demanda en el tribunal para quitarte tu abrigo, déjale también tu manto.

And if any man will sue thee at the law and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also;

Si alguien te obliga a ir una milla, ve con él dos.

And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain.

Da a cualquiera que te pida, y no le des la espalda a quien quiera pedirte prestado.

Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not away.

También está escrito que debes amar a tu prójimo y odiar a tu enemigo.

And behold it is written also, that thou shalt love thy neighbor and hate thine enemy;

Pero yo te digo: ama a tus enemigos, bendice a los que te maldicen, haz el bien a los que te odian y ora por los que te maltratan y te persiguen.

But I say unto you, love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them who despitefully use you and persecute you;

Así podrás ser hijo de tu Padre que está en los cielos, porque él hace que su sol salga tanto sobre los malos como sobre los buenos.

That ye may be the children of your Father who is in heaven; for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good.

Así que las cosas de tiempos antiguos, que estaban bajo la ley, todas se han cumplido en mí.

Therefore those things which were of old time, which were under the law, in me are all fulfilled.

Las cosas viejas han pasado, y todo se ha hecho nuevo.

Old things are done away, and all things have become new.

Así que quiero que seas perfecto, así como yo lo soy, o como tu Padre que está en los cielos es perfecto.

Therefore I would that ye should be perfect even as I, or your Father who is in heaven is perfect.
